thick, compared to the 0.75mm thick metal more
common on SUVs today), suspension components are sized to match
those in full-size
pickups, and in addition, the G-wagens are
hand-built in the Magna Steyr plant in Graz, Austria - the wall-to-roof
welds are done
by hand, as are the
thick seam welds that box the robust ladder frame,
as well as join most body parts. The result of the heavy-duty
construction
is a ride that feels
as solid as a state-of-the-art S-class luxury
sedan. If you bounce the G over an eight-inch boulder you won't hear a
squeak or
rattle, nor will you
feel any twisting or jiggling motions. The
four-wheel-drive system of the G-wagen is permanently engaged - the
driver can lock
and open each of the
differentials front, center, and rear,
independently by pressing three switches on the top of the center
instrument panel. It
requires some
training to use these switches properly (e.g. the
switches won't work unless you select low range on the transfer
gearbox), but
every part of the
process is push-button and completely
automatic. The differentials allow power to be sent to all wheels
all of the time, when all
three differentials
are locked, however, then all four wheels are
locked together, giving maximum traction and enabling the G-wagen to
climb
grades steeper than
it could without all wheels locked together. Standard

General
overview of the Mercedes-Benz Geläendewagen:
1979-1989
Born out of a joint
venture in 1979 between Mercedes-Benz and two other
companies, Steyr and Puch of Austria, the Steyr-Daimler-Puch
Geläendewagen was (and still is) virtually hand-built in Austria.
It
was first and foremost a heavy-duty off-road vehicle favored by various
military groups and safari zealots. Loosely translated,
Geläendewagen
means "tough terrain vehicle." Those familiar with this rig usually
call it by its nickname, G-wagen. Usually propelled by a diesel engine,
the early G-wagen was not luxurious by any stretch (manual windows and
tartan cloth seats were the order of the day) but developed a
reputation for being able to get through most anything, no matter how
treacherous or steep the terrain.
These workhorses were
offered with a variety of relatively frugal
gasoline and diesel power plants. As with other Mercedes-Benz models,
the numbers and letters indicated the engine's size and whether it was
gasoline- or diesel-powered, e.g., the 230 G (gas) and 240 GD (diesel).
Two gas models (the four-cylinder 230 and six-cylinder 280) and two
diesel models (the 240 and 300) were available with horsepower ranging
from 72 to 150. There were three body styles to choose from, a pair of
short-wheelbase two-doors (hardtop and convertible) and a
long-wheelbase four-door wagon.
Although the G-wagen
was not offered for sale in the U.S., the
so-called "gray market" of the 1980s made them obtainable by Americans
with deep pockets. The gray market consisted of companies that brought
European-spec vehicles over to the States and modified them to meet our
government's safety and emissions standards. One such company, Europa
International, became so successful at this that it struck an agreement
with the G-wagen people to build the vehicles it ordered to U.S.
standards — that way Europa International wouldn't have to deal with
modifying the vehicles itself anymore. Advertising in such high-brow
publications as Robb Report, Europa built up a nice business, importing
the various G-wagens (two-door hardtop, two-door ragtop and four-door
hardtop), customizing them for its clients and selling them for around
$135,000.
The calling card of
the G was its incredibly rugged nature; in 1983 a
280 GE (with Jacky Ickx and Claude Brasseur at the helm) won what is
perhaps the most grueling race on the planet, the Paris-Dakar Rally.
Not much changed for the next couple of years, but in 1986 the 50,000th
G-wagen rolled off the line. That year also saw minor changes to the
cabin that improved comfort, the addition of a catalytic converter that
decreased emissions and the replacement of the 240 GD with the 250 GD.
The next three years passed without anything newsworthy, save for the
G's 10th birthday in 1989.
1990-1996
A revised chassis was
found under the familiar (some would say classic)
body for 1991. A pair of high-tech features topped the list of
improvements that weren't readily apparent at a casual glance. Antilock
brakes and three electronically engaged locking differentials made the
G safer on road and more capable off. In addition to the standard
locking center differential seen on most truck-based SUVs, the G
boasted front and rear locking diffs that gave the Benz the grip and
agility of a mountain goat when faced with treacherous terrain.
Recognizing that the
G-wagen was being considered by some folks who
cared more about power, luxury and foul-weather capability than all-out
trail-busting ability, Mercedes brought out the limited-production,
V8-powered 500 GE for 1993. As it was geared toward that aforementioned
clientele, the 500 GE "only" had the center and rear differential
locks, as the front one was typically employed only in the most severe
off-road conditions. With 240 horsepower and a cabin trimmed in burled
walnut and plush leather, the 500 GE was a precursor of what would be
coming to America nearly a decade later. As with all other
Mercedes-Benz models, the G-wagen's naming system changed for 1994.
From this year on, the "G" would come before the model number (that is,
"G500" as opposed to "500 GE"). For 1996 the G300 Turbo Diesel debuted,
replacing the G350 Turbo Diesel. Although the 300 had a smaller engine,
its output (at 177 hp) was actually greater than that of the larger
engine it replaced.
1997-2004
A few new models
debuted for 1997. One of those was the new cabriolet
that featured a power-operated convertible top. Another was the 290 GD
Turbo Diesel (120 hp) that replaced the non-turbo 290 GD. The G320
likewise kept its name but received a new engine, a 215-hp V6. After
its brief run in 1993 and 1994, the V8-powered G500 made a comeback for
1998, and became more widely available. That year also saw the merger
of Mercedes-Benz and Chrysler, giving rise to DaimlerChrysler.
To celebrate the
G-wagen's 20th birthday in 1999, Mercedes rolled out a
special edition of the G500, called the G500 Classic. This year also
saw the fitment of multifunction controls mounted on the steering wheel
that operated, among other things, the audio system and trip computer.
The year 2000 marked a turning point for diesel-powered versions of the
G. Featuring the latest diesel technologies (such as common rail direct
injection), the powerful G400 CDI provided brisk performance equal to
(or even better than) equivalently sized gas engines. The technology
windfall continued for 2001 when stability control (called "ESP")
debuted for the G-Class.
Finally, in 2002
after years of losing potential sales in America, the
G-wagen came to the States. Actually, only one model was chosen for
power- and luxury-hungry Americans — the G500. At nearly $75,000, the
G500 certainly wasn't cheap, but considering that the gray market was
getting nearly twice that over 10 years earlier (for six-cylinder
models, no less), it must have looked like a bargain for G-wagen fans.
A mild facelift, including mirror-mounted turn signals and lights, also
occurred that year.
Mercedes' in-house
tuner, AMG, performed its magic upgrades on the
G-Class for 2003; the result was the 349-hp G55 AMG. The G55 sported
engineering and styling tweaks over the standard G500 that included a
slightly larger and modified V8 (with 57 more horsepower and 51 more
pound-feet of torque), side-exit exhaust, a prominent aluminum brush
guard and unique 18-inch wheels with meaty 285/55VR18 performance tires.
Time to celebrate. To
mark the G-wagen's 25th birthday, Mercedes rolled
out the "Classic 25" model for 2004, essentially a G500 with special
wheels, brushed aluminum side moldings, silver grille color and of
course commemorative badges. Later in the year, a celebration of
horsepower takes place with the G55 receiving the same supercharged
5.4-liter V8 found in the pavement-scorching E55. Rated at an
astounding 476 horsepower, the muscle-bound V8 catapults the G55 to 60
mph in just 5.5 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 130
mph, more than enough for a heavy SUV. Other changes this year included
a trio of additional standard features — multicontour front seats, a
Harman Kardon audio system and rear parking sensors.

G-Class: courtesy of Wikipedia ...
Commonly referred to
as the G-Wagen, short for Geläendewagen (or
Cross-Country Vehicle), Mercedes secured military contracts for the
vehicle in the late 1970s and offered a civilian version to the public
in 1979. Designed to be the most durable, reliable, and rugged machine
with four wheels, the G-wagen is a highly sophisticated off-road
vehicle utilizing three fully locking differentials. (The only SUV sold
in the U.S. to have such) Used by many countries for military use.
Among the engines offered in the G-Class for the 2004 model year is a
5.5-litre V8. Major models include the G500, and G55 AMG. Marking its
25th anniversary, the 2005 Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG was relaunched as the
G55 Kompressor or G55K and received a boost in power, thanks to a
5.5-liter, supercharged V8 developing 469 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of
torque.
History
The G-Wagen was first
offered for sale in 1979 and redesigned in 1990
and updated in 1997. A new version was expected for 2007, but the new
GL-Class will not replace the G-Wagen and it will continue to be hand
built in Graz, Austria at an annual production rate of 4,000 to 6,000
units.
W460/W461
The original
W460/W461 G-Wagen went onsale for the 1979 model year. It
was offered in two wheelbases and three body styles: A 2-door
short-wheelbase convertible, a 2-door short-wheelbase wagon, and a
long-wheelbase 4-door wagon.
This version of the
G-Wagen was popular with military and offroad
enthusiasts, with more than 50,000 built in the first decade. The
vehicle was not offered in the United States officially, but with the
demise of the "casual importation" grey-market in the mid-1980s,
importers like Europa G-Wagen were successful in selling G-Wagens
(mostly W463s) that had been modified to meet US DOT specifications for
around $135,000.
W463
The chassis was
revised for 1990 as the W463 with anti-lock brakes and
a full trio of electronically-locking differentials. The V8-powered
500GE was new for 1993, catering to more of a luxury than off-road
crowd with only center and rear differential locks and a luxurious
cabin of leather and wood. This luxury-Wagen lasted just two years,
however. All G-Wagens began using Mercedes-Benz's new letter-first
naming scheme in 1994.
The range was
refreshed again in 1997, including the introduction of a
power-topped convertible and two new engines, the turbo 2.9 L Diesel
and the V6-powered (M112 motor) G320 - previous years' G320s were
outfitted with the M104 I6. The luxury G-wagen returned for 1998 as the
G500, with official sales beginning in the United States in 2002 at
$75,000. The 349 hp (260 kW) G55 AMG cemented the vehicle in the
American market, however, with many snapped up by celebrities. A 476 hp
(355 kW) G55, introduced in 2004, could hit 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds.
W463
Cabrio
The G-class Cabrio is
the only handmade 4x4 in the world that has a
power-top and the highly sophisticated off-road vehicle utilizing three
fully locking differentials (The only SUV sold in the U.S. to have
such). There are only twenty of these handmade vehicles produced a year
in Graz, Austria. Mercedes Benz USA does not import the G-class Cabrio
to the United States but private importers such as Europa G-Wagen has
imported these vehicles that cost up to 135,000 U.S. dollars.
W463 / X164 (2006 and
beyond)
It was rumored that,
with military contracts for the G-Class completed,
production of the old G-wagen in Graz, Austria would cease as of 2006.
However, current reports state that production of the current G-wagen
will continue for the foreseeable future, alongside its once-intended
replacement, the GL-Class (X164). An outcry among enthusiasts who
admired the G-Class for its tremendous off-road potential (for example,
the only SUV in the North American market with 3 locking differentials)
showed that a market still existed for such a vehicle. Mercedes-Benz
elected to continue G-Class production for the hardcore off-road
market, while the larger 3-row GL-Class would be marketed as a
competitor for the likes of the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator.
As of July 2006,
Mercedes-Benz announced a late-availability 2006 model
year G-Class on their website. The company also decided to show a
facelifted 2007 model at the Paris Auto Show in September of 2006. and
to increase the power of the G 55 K AMG version from 476 to 500 hp.
It is also possible
that a compact off-roader called G-Class will be
built, both as a 3-door and as a 5-door, besides the GLK-Class compact
crossover SUV.
The new G-Wagen will
use the company's updated 4-valve V6 and V8
engines and will have an updated interior and exterior.
Military
Use
-Austrian Army :The
Austrian Army has been a long time user of various
Puch G models.
-German Armed Forces:
The German Armed Forces uses the G-Class under
the name "Wolf". Over 12.000 vehicles have been delivered in over 50
versions, ranging from ambulance vehicles to armored vehicles used by
the German special forces.
-Canadian Army: A
total of 1,159 vehicles have been ordered by the
Canadian Army beginning in late 2003. An armored kit can be fitted (or
removed) in 8 hours by 3 soldiers. The rugged construction of the
G-Class and the armor kit have been credited with saving the lives of a
number of Canadians during their use in Afghanistan. Delivery of
these vehicles to Reserve units has also begun. It is currently set to
completely replace the ILTIS by 2007 in LFCA. For the most exposed
missions 75 RG-31 Nyala built by BAE Land Systems OMC, South Africa,
will be used.
-Estonian Defence
Forces: The Estonian Defence Forces have a small
number of various G-Class vehicles, which were recently purchased to
replace the outdated UAZ and Volkswagen Iltis jeeps.
-United States Marine
Corps: The U.S. Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance
use the 290 GDT diesel 4x4 Mercedes-Benz G-Class for their operations.
-Dutch Army: The
Dutch Army uses various versions of the Mercedes-Benz
G-Class.
-Finnish Army: The
Finnish Army uses the Geläendewagen mostly as an
ambulance, other versions are also in service.
-Army of Luxembourg:
The Military of Luxembourg uses the 300D variant
of the Geläendewagen.
-French Army: The
French Army have the Peugeot P4 which is a derivative
from the G-Class equipped with Peugeot engine and equipment.
The Norwegian Armed
Forces
-The Norwegian
Defence Force: bought 240 GD to replace Volvo and Land
Rover jeeps in the mid-1980s, and 300 GD to use as ambulances. During
the early 90's 290 GD's where bought, and in the first half of the 00's
a small number of armoured 270CDI's were put into service.
-Danish Army: The
Danish Army bought the 240GD/24 to supersede the
M151A1, the Volkswagen 181 ("Jagdwagen") and the Land Rover 88. First
deliveries were in 1985 and more than 1.300 have been put in service.
Currently the Danes are taking delivery of up to 1,000 270CDIs. A
number of 290 GDs and 300 GDs have also been used.
-Singapore Army: The
Singapore Army bought the 270 and 290 versions as
secondary military transport. It is used in soft-top truck
configuration and is known as a 1.5-tonner to its users. The Army also
deploys the extremely short-wheelbase, soft-top version for its
Colonels, Battalion COs, Brigade and Division Commanders as personal
field transports.
-Swiss Army: The
Swiss Army uses the 230 with soft top as the primary
general purpose carrier, and a hardtop version as mobile radio access
point. It is in service since 1985 and gradually replaced Willys Jeeps,
Haflinger light transports and Pinzgauer medium transports in the
liaison and transport role. All versions in Swiss Army use are unarmed.
